Charles and Ray Eames debuted their first collection of molded plywood children’s furniture in 1945, pioneering a new direction in furniture design. This collection, which included a table, chair, and stools, was scaled down for children and allowed the Eames duo to experiment with molded plywood on a manageable scale. The straightforward construction of these pieces enabled Molded Plywood and Evans Products to refine production techniques, setting the stage for the Eames’ larger-scale furniture production.
Although molded plywood had been used by designers like Marcel Breuer and Alvar Aalto since the 1930s, the Eames pushed the technology further by incorporating compound curves for enhanced strength and comfort. Although this children's furniture line was short-lived, it played a crucial role in establishing molded plywood as a durable and versatile material, eventually leading to the mass production of iconic Eames designs. Today, these early pieces are valued for their innovation and craftsmanship.
